San Angelo Computed Tomography Program

Howard College offers an Advanced Technical Certificate in Computed Tomography (CT) for radiologic technologists who want to pursue secondary certification in CT through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).

The program provides the academic and technical preparation needed to perform a variety of radiologic procedures in computed tomography. Graduates are prepared to produce diagnostic-quality CT images of the human body for use in diagnosing medical conditions.

Applicants must be registered technologists through the ARRT and must hold a Medical Radiologic Technologist license through the Texas Medical Board.

After successfully completing the program, students who want to earn secondary certification in computed tomography may apply to the ARRT to take the certification examination. Individuals who pass the examination may be awarded the certification credential.

In keeping with the mission and goals of Howard College, the Computed Tomography Advanced Certificate Program is dedicated to educating students in the use of specialized radiography equipment to produce diagnostic sectional images of human anatomy.

The program provides innovative and educationally sound learning opportunities and supports the personal development of each student in the Computed Tomography field. Graduates are prepared with the entry-level skills needed to perform quality procedures, provide excellent patient care, prepare for the national ARRT registry examination, and serve the community as competent Computed Tomography technologists.

Before completing any application requirements, contact Julie Book at jbook@howardcollege.edu for current information and instructions. The program is offered only when there is sufficient interest to form a class cohort.

Application Deadline

All admission requirements must be completed by July 15 for classes beginning in the fall.

Pre-Application Requirements

Be a registered technologist in radiologic technology through the ARRT.
Hold a Medical Radiologic Technologist license through the Texas Medical Board.
Complete and pass an approved Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers course.
Complete and pass a criminal background check through CastleBranch.

Application Requirements

Submit the Health Professions application for the desired program to the Health Professions Division between May 1 and July 15.

Include an official transcript from each college or university attended, including Howard College.

Provide copies of the required immunization documentation and keep the originals for your records.

Hepatitis B: Three doses or a positive titer. At least the first two doses of the series must be completed by the July 15 deadline.
Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR): Two doses or a positive titer.
Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis (Tdap): One dose within the last 10 years.
Varicella: Two doses or a positive titer.

Selection Process

Selection depends on the availability of clinical education space. Grades from previous Radiography program courses may also be considered.

Requirements Before the Fall Semester

Selected students must complete the following when instructed by the program chair:

Pass a 10-panel drug test within 30 days before beginning clinical rotations.
Provide proof of health insurance.
Provide documentation of an influenza vaccination and completed tuberculosis screening.

Clinical Practicum Travel

Students may be assigned to affiliated clinical facilities and are responsible for travel to and from those locations.

Clinical Practicum Schedule

Clinical schedules may include daytime, evening, weekend, or staggered hours.

Transfer of Credit

Transfer of Computed Tomography credit from other programs is evaluated individually.

Online Coursework

All courses are delivered online except clinical and practicum courses.
