2012 Summer Bridge Program

The e-START grant’s Summer Preview Event (a Bridge Program effort) was held June 6-9, 2012. The objectives of the program were to:
  1. Encourage students to pursue STEM careers.
  2. Inform students of the pathways to STEM careers through community colleges (specifically, the Howard College system).
  3. Provide students with essential information related to financial aid, application, registration, advising, and articulation.
  4. Establish a support network for potential STEM students.
Eleven students from six schools attended. Some of the activities included:
  • Learning about college math classes and careers in mathematics and engaging in math-based challenges
  • Learning about college biology and exploring careers in biology, touring the biology labs and making physical models
  • Learning about college microbiology and careers in microbiology and doing microbiology experiments
  • Learning about careers in technology and making an animation
  • Experiments in rocketry and aviation
  • Learning about careers at NASA
  • A picnic on Scenic Mountain and a scavenger hunt
  • Team builders, sports contests, and a night of Karaoke and dancing
The evaluation surveys from the students indicated that they had a wonderful time and learned a great deal. They ranked most criteria as “Awesome!”
