Perkins Grant

Through the Carl D. Perkins Grant, funds are available for students enrolled in a career and technical education program that need assistance with child care and/or textbooks.  Several criteria as outlined below must be met in order to benefit from these programs:

Child Care Assistance

The child care program affords students financial assistance with child care while attending school.  Eligible students who complete the application process and maintain the child care funding requirements may select a licensed day care facility or registered family home, and Perkins funds will cover a portion of the child care cost in the form of a stipend paid directly to the selected facility.  Students in this program are required to maintain a 2.0 GPA as well as to submit monthly attendance reports.  Frequent project reports and attendance at various workshops are also a requirement.  Complete eligibility guidelines for the child care assistance program may be obtained from the Perkins Child Care Advisor noted at the bottom of the page.

Textbook Assistance

The textbook assistance program was designed to provide help for students needing assistance with textbooks.  Career and technical education students may qualify for the textbook assistance program based on the following criteria:

  • Minimum of a 2.0 grade point average
  • Completion of one full semester at Howard College
  • Enrolled full-time in semester for which assistance is sought
  • Qualify as a special populations student
  • Officially recognized as a career and technical education major
