- California
State University Northridge Located in Northridge,
California, CSUN boasts the largest
nationwide enrollment of students who are deaf and hard of hearing at a
mainstream institution. CSUN was one of the first mainstream
universities in the nation to admit people who are deaf and hard of
hearing. The National Center on Deafness, a landmark institution
on the campus of CSUN, provides support services to the deaf and hard
of hearing student population and continues to bridge the deaf and
hearing communities. Today, more than 220 deaf and hard-of-hearing
students attend CSUN and are mainstreamed into regular university
classes.
- Gallaudet University, liberal arts college for the
deaf, located in Washington, D.C. Gallaudet is the world's only
university that brings together deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing students as
well as faculty in the common pursuit of education. The Gallaudet community
lives by the tenets it explicitly states in its "Commitment to Sign
Communication: We have the right and responsibility to understand and be
understood. Clear and well-paced visual communication is a requirement for
this learning community. We will respect the sign language style of every
individual and use whatever is necessary to communicate in a given
situation. We will be assertive and sincere in our efforts to attain
sign language proficiency so we can communicate directly with each other."

Technical
Institute for
the Deaf is the world’s first and largest technological
college for students who are deaf or hard of hearing, located in
Rochester, New York. NTID is one of eight colleges within Rochester
Institute of Technology. RIT is consistently ranked among top
universities in U.S. News & World Report: America’s Best
Colleges. RIT/NTID provides excellent academic programs;
outstanding access and support services; and diverse educational,
social, and personal development opportunities for students. Students
can choose from more than 200 programs of study in fields such as Biotechnology, Information Technology,
Professional and Technical Communication, Graphic Design, Photography, and
more.
- Southwest
Collegiate
Institute for the Deaf, located in Big Spring, Texas, is the
only self-contained community
college for the deaf in the United States. SWCID offers
certificate
and associate degree programs for deaf and hard of
hearing students. The certificate programs include Data Entry
Technology, Office Technology, Graphic Arts Technology, Building
Trades, Dental Laboratory Technology, Paraprofessional for the Deaf and
Hard of Hearing,
and Automotive Maintenance Technician. The Associate Degree
programs offered at SWCID include Computer Information Systems,
Business Transfer Program, Accounting, Drafting, General Studies, and
Paraprofessional for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Students may
attend nearby Howard College for Nursing, Cosmetology and other
programs where interpreters are provided. Many students take classes at
both the Howard College and SWCID campuses, and free shuttle
transportation between campuses is provided.
