Adopt-a-College Hurricane Harvey Relief

As Hurricane Harvey relief and recovery efforts are underway across the state, Howard College is partnering with Midland College in an “Adopt-A-College” initiative to help some of our sister colleges on the coast. Not only did their individual campuses receive damage and destruction, but their employees and students are left with trying to recover from their own personal losses. I cannot even begin to imagine the difficulty they are experiencing as they go through this process.

At this time, we have contacted Alvin Community College and College of the Mainland. They have been more than gracious in their response and appreciate any and everything we can do to help!

Alvin Community College Needs:
Laptop computers for students: We are using the funds that have already been raised to purchase laptops for students so that they can continue their schoolwork. We aim to have these purchased by the end of the week thanks to the generosity that you all have already shown!
Money: They have established an account where we can make a donation and their foundation is going to match the $$ raised up to $10,000. They are using these funds to get Walmart cards, etc for employees and students as they request. If you feel led to donate cash, we will collect and donate cash to this account. If you want to write a check, please make your check out to “ACC Foundation”. These will be sent directly to their foundation for deposit. Do not make your check out to HC – we can’t accept it into college funds.
Toiletries: Deodorant, body wash, toothpaste, etc. Items that people can use for personal hygiene. Please donate new items only.
Paper products: Paper plates, drinkware, plastic ware, etc.
Food: They are requesting individual microwaveable meals as they have several staff and students living in hotels. Please do not donate or collect food items that do not meet this request.

College of the Mainland Needs:
We are still waiting to receive their itemized list so that we know we are donating/collecting items that are truly needed. Once we have that list I will send it out to the district in an update!

We will send out updates as we move forward but we would like to have our initial wave of collection completed by September 30th. There may be additional needs arise as the colleges, their employees, and their students move forward in recovery. We would like to be with them through the process and show our support in their trying times both now and in the future. As Dr. Sparks always reminds us, “Tough times don’t last…but tough community colleges do!”

Many of you may have already donated in other venues and please do not think that there is an expectation that you continue to give unless you are led to do so. We feel like our efforts to help our sister colleges will give us a chance to make a personal impact with people just like us!
