e-Science & Technology Across Rural TexasProject Summary: e-START is a five-year project designed to increase the number of students who enter and complete programs in science, technology, and mathematics at Howard College and go on to successfully earn degrees in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) at four-year institutions. It is funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Title V Program for Hispanic Serving Institutions. The grant specifically targets Hispanics, women, and other populations who are under represented in STEM fields. The project has four main objectives.
- Objective 1: Increase the number of students who select and are successful in STEM areas of study. Some of the activities that will be initiated to support this objective are summer bridge programs, student science and engineering clubs, and career counseling by specialists in STEM areas of study.
- Objective 2: Improve STEM course selection and capabilities. E-Learning will be extensively employed to achieve this objective. Current courses will be improved and new courses and new means of course delivery will be implemented. The development of two mobile science labs will be among the added resources for STEM education.
- Objective 3: Improve instruction in STEM courses. The project will provide extensive opportunities for professional development of faculty members who teach and/or design STEM courses.
- Objective 4: Establish articulation agreements in STEM fields with four-year institutions. Howard College intends to formally establish transfer agreements and 2+2 STEM degree plan agreements with several four-year institutions during the funding period of the grant.
