Howard College / SWCID Athletics Proposal >>
As a former varsity basketball player at Gallaudet University, I know from personal experience that collegiate athletic programs are a significant factor in the college-life experience. Not only do they offer a source of entertainment and participation for all students, but they also serve as a motivator for the athletes to remain focused on their educational goals.
SouthWest Collegiate Institute for the Deaf (SWCID) has accepted the new challenge of incorporating competitive athletics into its array of programs and services. We are in the initial stages of this development and just recently shifted from intramural to extramural sports with our men’s basketball team. Believe it or not, I, in addition to my role as provost, am serving as the head coach. To date, our Rattlers men’s basketball team has been playing against other community college varsity teams as well as a few university level junior varsity teams that are members of the NJCAA and NAIA.
Another endeavor on the horizon for the SWCID Athletic Program is to establish a women’s volleyball program. Valerie Trofimenkoff, SWCID faculty and a member of the U.S. Deaf Volleyball team (2005, 2009, and 2013), will serve as the head coach for the women’s volleyball team once it is developed.
Due to limitations within our funding protocols, we are required to utilize outside funding sources to make this program a reality. Our goals are high and we need your support to reach them! On behalf of the SWCID Foundation Board, I ask you to review our enclosed proposal and brochure and ask that you consider making a donation to the SWCID Foundation in support of the SWCID athletic program. Thank you in advance for partnering with us as we provide these deserving young athletes the opportunity to thrive in both academics and extramural sports.
