Hawk Rodeo Team Finishes Fall Season at Tech

Vernon – Ryan Viva from Chattanooga, TN led the Howard men’s rodeo team as they competed in the final rodeo of the fall season at Texas Tech University on October 23-25. Viva was a 4.6 in the first round qualifying him for another short round appearance where he posted a time of 5.2 seconds to win second in that go and 3rd in the average.  Viva holds the #1 spot among Southwest Region steer wrestlers.

Another strong representative of the HC men’s team is team roper J.W Townsend of Aztec, NM qualifying in the team roping event with a 7.5 second first round time.  Things did not go as well in the short round and Townsend’s team had to use three loops to stop the clock and hold on to 6th place finish in the round and the average.

Hawk rough stock riders Kyle Andrews of Valley, AL and Wacey Cody of San Angelo left their mark in Lubbock while competing in bull riding and bareback riding.  Andrews made his way into the short round with a 75 point bull ride in the first round to split fourth in that go.  A no score in the short round left Andrews with a 4th place finish for the week-end.  Cody qualified into the short round of competition of the bareback riding with a 65 point effort.  Wacey could not hang on for the eight second whistle in the short round.

Lubbock wasn’t as kind to the Lady Hawks as Kady Knox of Big Spring was the closest Hawk Lady to qualify to the short round but suffered a broken barrier in the breakaway roping.

Texas Tech was the final stop for the Soutwest Region fall schedule.  The Hawks have several members holding down top honors heading into the spring semester.

Hawk Duo Grabs Title

October 14, 2008

Vernon – HC Hawk men’s duo Codee Reynolds (header) and J W Townsend (heeler) roped two steers in 13.5 seconds to win the average title at the Vernon College Rodeo in Vernon, TX, October 9-11, 2008. After a time of 7.0 seconds to finish just out of the points in the first round, the pair turned in a blistering run of 6.5 seconds to win the short round and the average. This is the second short round appearance for Reynolds and Townsend.

Hawk team mates Calvin Brevik (header) and KC Curtis (heeler) found their way into the short round with a time of 6.7 to split second in the first round. A no time in the short round took last year’s CNFR qualifiers out of the average.

In the steer wrestling, Ryan Viva turfed two steers in 11.9 seconds to finish third in the average. Viva won the long round of competition with a 4.6 second run.

Adam Sawyer made his presence known in the steer wrestling with runs of 5.1 and 8.1 to finish sixth in the average.

Brent Walden was the only HC tie down roper to qualify for the short round. Walden tied his first calf in 11.0 to finish eighth in that go. After a miss in the short round, Walden did not advance in the average.

Cody Samora is three for three in short round qualifications. Samora rode his bull for 77 points and fifth place in the first round. Samora next ride came up a little short of the needed eight seconds in the short round and received a no score in the short-go. Former Hawk Jamon Turner captured the title with two rides totaling 167 points.

The Hawk men had another good outing finishing the weekend tied for second and third in the team standings.

For the Hawk women, Kady Knox was the closest to qualifying in the top ten. Knox posted a 3.9 second run in the breakaway roping, the cut off was 3.5.

The Hawk Rodeo team will be wrapping up the fall season in Lubbock, TX on October 23-25 at Texas Tech University. For more details and standings, go to www.collegerodeo.com or www.howardcollege.edu.

HC COWGIRL SNAGS ALL AROUND TITLE

Portales NM, September 18-20, 2008

jana.jpg

BIG SPRING - The Howard College Rodeo Team kicked things off at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, NM this past week-end and got it started with a bang! Jana Jasper, a freshman from Sturgis, SD, began her collegiate rodeo career in high fashion accumulating enough points in two events to win the Women’s All-Around title and lead her team to a third place finish in the NRIA season opener.

Jasper won the first round of the breakaway roping with a 2.8 second run and tied her goat in 7.2 seconds in the first round to split 3rd place. The short-go did not go as well for Jasper as she finished third in the average of the breakaway roping and sixth in the average of the goat tying.

Freshman, Kady Knox of Big Spring, TX and sophomore Tina Harris of Stanton, TX also qualified to the short round. Knox clocked a 3.4 second run in the breakaway roping to split 5th in the first round of competition. Harris competed in the barrel racing stopping the clock in 17.74 to finish fifth in the first round. Short-go action brought a missed calf and a barrel penalty to keep these ladies out of the average.

CNFR qualifiers Calvin Brevik of Durango, CO and Cody Samora of Cortez, CO brought their “A” game and also got off to a good start in Portales. Brevik tied his first calf in 8.8 to win second in the long round and tied his second calf in 9.0 seconds to finish second in the short round and the average. Samora won second in the first round of bull riding competition with an 82 but was unable to hang on for 8 in the short round, still taking home 4th place in the average.

HC Team ropers Codee Reynolds of Huntsville, AR and J. W. Towsend of Aztec, NM finished 4th in the first round with a time of 6.3 seconds. A broken barrier and a leg penalty kept them out of a top spot in the average. HC Returner Adam Sawyer teamed with Chase Massengill of South Plains College and won third in the first round with a 6.2 to win 3rd in that go. A miss in the short round took this team out of the average.

With this kind of opening success, the HC Rodeo Team has high hopes for a strong season. “We have had one of our better starts,” said Greg Kernick, Rodeo Coach for the Hawks. “We have to continue to get to the short rounds and capitalize on that every time we can,” added Kernick.

The next competition for the HAWKS will be at Sul Ross State University in Alpine TX, October 2-4, followed by Vernon College October 9-11, and Texas Tech University October 23-25. The view results or see the season schedule, visit www.howardcollege.edu

HOWARD COLLEGE RODEO TEAM FINISHES 10th AT CNFR

By Eric C. Rodewald, Howard College Sports Information Director

(CASPER, WYOM.) - The Howard College Men’s Rodeo Team placed 10th at the College National Finals Rodeo on the strength of header Calvin Brevik and heeler KC Curtis scoring all 165 points in the team roping competition finishing sixth overall in the average.

Brevik and Curtis were second in the First Go with a 5.9, 27th in the Second Go with a 20.0, and fifth in the Third Go with a 5.6, qualifying for Saturday's Short Go.

national finals qualifiers.jpg
Howard head coach Greg Kernick said despite the high score (time) in the Second Go, Brevik’s previous experience heeling paid off in keeping their national title hopes alive.

Brevik initially missed as the header, but Curtis picked up the slack and roped the steer’s head, while Brevik came back around and heeled the steer to complete the ride and receive a score for the round.

"Calvin (Brevik) has heeled in high school and at other venues, so his experience and skill really paid off when it counted," Kernick said. "It was huge that they had the savvy to record a time since a no time takes you completely out of the running."

In the Short Round on Saturday, which only the top 12 teams overall qualify for, the Howard pair finished fourth after suffering a five second penalty for a score of 10.1.

Without the penalty, Brevik and Curtis would have had the second fastest run of the CNFR with a 5.1 and finished fourth in the final overall Team Roping standings.

If the College National Finals Rodeo is the Super Bowl of college rodeo, then Saturday's Short Go is the NFL's equivalent to the Pro Bowl, as the nation's most talented get an opportunity to showcase their talent on the biggest stage possible.

"Any time you make it to Saturday it is special," Kernick proudly stated. "It was definitely mission accomplished for Calvin (Brevik) and KC (Curtis)."

Also competing for Howard was bull rider Cody Samora who finished 22nd out of 38 riders. Samora scored a 63 in the First Go for 12th place in the round, but was unable to stay on for eight seconds in his other two rides.

According to Kernick, Samora didn’t have the greatest bull in the First Go to record a better score.

"Cody (Samora) could have elected a re-ride, but he knew the bull and it wouldn’t have been much better if he could have stayed on," Kernick said. "Once you have one down, there is no guarantee that you would make it eight seconds on the re-ride, so you would rather have one down than not."

Kernick said that Samora’s bull in the Third Go really bucked and if he would have been able to complete the ride Samora would have propelled him into the top seven and qualified for the Short Go.

In what was one of the most successful season’s in Kernick’s nine year tenure in Big Spring, he said the rodeo program at Howard is fortunate to have so much support.

"It is almost overwhelming to me and our program that we have so much support from the community and the college," Kernick said. "Not every program is as fortunate as we are."

Despite Casper being so far away and not very realistic for fans to make the trip, he was most appreciative of one fan that did make the trip.

"To have the president of Howard College, Dr. Sparks, make the trip to Casper and support us really means a lot to me, but more importantly it meant a lot to Calvin (Brevik), KC (Curtis), and Cody (Samora)," Kernick said. "It shows how special the people are here at Howard."

All three athletes will be returning to rodeo for Howard College next season.

HAWK ALL-AMERICAN SHORTSTOP, LADENDORF 60th OVERALL PICK BY THE TWINS

Howard College Baseball shortstop Tyler Ladendorf was drafted by the Minnesota Twins with the 60th pick of the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft.

Ladendorf lead the NJCAA with a .542 batting average. The first team NJCAA All-American led the Hawks to a no. 3 national ranking and a 48-10 record in his sophomore campaign. The Des Plains, Ill. native signed with Oklahoma University in the fall, but will most likely sign a contract to play professionally.

Last season Ladendorf led the nation in stolen bases with a perfect 65 swipes and finished as Howard's all-time base thief with 97 career stolen bases.

Right handed pitcher Pedro Villarreal was drafted in the 7th round by the Cincinnati Reds. Villarreal had previously signed with the University of Texas-Pan American.

By Eric C. Rodewald, Howard College Sports Information Director

Former Howard College standout Darby Brown led the Texas A&M Aggies to the Sweet Sixteen of College Baseball when A&M advanced to face Rice in the Houston Super Regional. Unfortunately, A&M dropped a pair of hard fought contests to the Owls to fall short of advancing to the 2008 College World Series in Omaha, Nebr.

darby brown a&m.jpgBrown earned a spot on the College Station Regional All-Tournament Team as the left handed designated hitter drove in 13 runs in the tournament. A&M defeated the University of Illinois-Chicago 15-1 to open regional play before pounding the University of Houston 22-4. Houston managed a 4-3 decision over the Aggies to force a decisive rematch with A&M winning 13-5 to advance A&M to this weekend's Houston Super Regional against instate rival, Rice. The Owls defeated Texas 7-4 to capture the Houston Regional Tournament Championship with a perfect 3-0 regional record.

Howard College’s Breast Cancer Awareness Day

April 26, 2008

Jack Barber Field

Howard College hosted their first annual Breast Cancer Awareness Day at Jack Barber Field in honor of all the women who have suffered from breast cancer to provide an opportunity for Howard College students, employees, and fans an opportunity to support the fight against breast cancer.

The event was spearheaded by Howard Assistant Baseball Coach J. Bob Thomas who felt the first year was a success.

“I think it went great. There were a lot of people from the town who came out and supported not only the game, but the actual breast cancer awareness,” Thomas stated. “Everything has got to start somewhere and I think the walk went good with 40 or 50 people and 250 or more people came out for the game. That’s all you can ask for is that people come out and show their support.”

KC Curtis of Monroe, Utah, accounted for 305 of those points, winning the all-around title while competing in calf roping and team roping.

HOWARD SPLITS TO OPEN WJCAC AT RIVAL MIDLAND

By JONATHAN HULL Big Spring Herald Sports Editorsoftball ami martinez.jpg

MIDLAND — There was only one thing consistent between the two games of a Western Junior College Athletic Conference softball doubleheader played by Howard College and Midland College Wednesday — the wind.

While the gusts consistently reached upwards of 20 miles per hour throughout the two contests, Howard and Midland found it difficult to find any groove at all in the field.

The Hawks knocked off the 4th-ranked Lady Chaparrals 8-6 in Game 1, holding on after jumping out to a 6-0 lead in the second inning. The role was reversed in Game 2 as Midland took a commanding 7-0 lead in the first inning only to see Howard equal that run production in the second inning. However, Midland never slowed down and added seven more runs for a 14-8 win. Click here for the complete story.

2/11/08 HC NEEDS 2 OT TO DOWN WTC

By JONATHAN HULL Big Spring Herald Sports Editor

monica jones.jpgHoward College’s women’s basketball team came very close to experiencing a bad case of deja vu in its 76-66 double-overtime win over Western Texas College’s Lady Westerners Monday night at Dorothy Garrett Coliseum.

In the two squads’ previous meeting Jan. 10, Western Texas trailed by 2 with 14 seconds left to play. The Lady Westerners’ Iesha Everline grabbed an offensive rebound off of an initial WTC miss and laid it in as time expired, sending the game to overtime. Western Texas scored the first five points in the extra frame, securing a 52-48 victory.

A similar end to regulation occurred Monday. With 7.5 seconds left, Howard’s Monica Jones made one of two free throws, putting the Hawks up 53-51. Western Texas quickly inbounded the ball and missed its initial chance to tie the game, but Trikeyia East grabbed the offensive rebound and hit a runner in the lane, tying the game at 53.

However, the similarities between the two games ended there. It was Howard’s turn to overcome a small deficit with just seconds remaining in the first overtime period.

2/11/08 HOWARD RALLIES TO DOWN WTCsean watson action 1.jpg

By JONATHAN HULL Big Spring Herald Sports Editor

One win away.

That’s how close Howard College’s Hawks are to clinching a return trip to the NJCAA Region V Tournament after defeating the Western Texas College Westerners, 63-57, Monday night at Dorothy Garrett Coliseum.

There was a huge contrast between Howard’s previous meeting with Western Texas Jan. 10 in Snyder and Monday’s contest. In the first game, Howard scored the first nine points and pushed that lead to 28-7 by the 10-minute mark of the first half. The Hawks carried a 46-26 lead at halftime and the Westerners never responded.

However, it was Howard that was forced to respond Monday.

The Westerners held a 27-23 advantage at intermission and opened the second half with a 7-0 run, extending their lead to 34-23 with 18:10 remaining in the game. Click here to read the entire story.

HOWARD BASEBALL SWEEPS VERNON, IS PERFECT 8-0

The Howard College Baseball team is off to a perfect 8-0 start with its second consecutive four game series sweep over the weekend. The Hawks finished off Vernon College Saturday afternoon with a pair of victories, winning 8-4 and 7-4 to maintain perfection at Jack Barber Field this season.

Howard College head coach Britt Smith attributes the Hawks success to their solid pitching.

“The pitching was really good all weekend, but we didn’t always make plays behind them,” Smith said. “They got four runs (in game two), but we booted a double play ball to start it off and that’s what got us in trouble, but it was good that we came back and answered and got the win.”

HC MEN FALL IN RECORD 5 OVERTIMES

LEVELLAND -- The Howard College men's basketball team came up short in a marathon game at #5 South Plains College falling 108-106 in five overtimes.

LEVELLAND — Everything was finally starting to mesh on the court. The Howard College women’s basketball team finally had its offense functioning late in the second half.

Howard was led by Danielle Cota and DeAndra Thomas, each scoring 10 points. Monica Jones finished with nine points and eight rebounds.

HOWARD DOWNS CLARENDON IN OVERTIME

Howard Head Coach Britt Smith is standing.

Howard head coach Britt Smith was happy to see three starting position players and a pair of pitchers signed NCAA Division I Scholarships for the 2008-2009 season.

"I thought it was good to have that many kids sign early. We’re excited to have them and we are certainly happy for them." Smith stated. "We have been in a position the last four years where almost every good freshman we have had we have lost to a four-year school. We would of lost Matt and certainly would of lost Tyler, but they weren’t qualifiers out of high school so we got those guys back or we would have been in the same boat we were in the last couple of years - having really talented players, but we can’t ever keep our guys long enough to see the fruits of our labor."
