Howard College History

1945 Howard County Junior College District was created by county-wide vote.
1946 E. C. Dodd - appointed 1st president
1946 Howard County Junior College District held its first classes located in the old hospital unit of the Big Spring Army Air Field.
1947 The college was admitted to full membership in the Association of Texas Colleges. This gave full validity to the transfer of credits to other colleges of the state.
1948 A temporary setback was experienced when the college gym was destroyed by fire.
1949 One hundred acres of land was purchased. This is where the college is currently standing.
1950 Contracts were started for the construction of the administration and science building, the auditorium, the gymnasium, the building at a cost of $550,000.
1952 Dr. W. A. Hunt - appointed 2nd president
1955 Four buildings were added and a few enlargements were made to the campus.
1959 HCJCD continued to grow with the construction of the mens and women's dormitories and the Dora Roberts Student Union Building.
1967 The W. A. Hunt library and the P. W. Malone math and science buildings were completed.
1971 Dr. Thomas Salter - appointed 3rd president
1974 Dr. Charles D. Hays - appointed 4th president
1974 Howard County Junior College was renamed Howard College.
1978 The Dorothy Garrett Coliseum was opened. The 90,000 square foot facility has a seating capacity of 6,500 with a cost of $2.5 million.
1980 The SouthWest Collegiate Institute for the Deaf was created. SWCID is housed in the one-time hospital of the former Webb Air Force Base. With its inception SWCID officially became the third college for the deaf in the world and the only community college in the world for the deaf.
1981 Howard College begin teaching vocational nursing classes at San Angelo ISD.
1984 Dr. Bob E. Riley - appointed 5th president
1986 Howard College of San Angelo opened their own campus.
1992 Dr. Cheryl T. Sparks - appointed 6th president
1995 Howard College celebrates 50 years!
1996 Howard College joins the on line Internet community as: http://www.howardcollege.edu
