Melissa's Thoughts on Howard College

Why Howard College?
I chose Howard College because, as a mother of three children I needed a college that would be affordable for my family. As a first generation college student I wanted to attend a college where I would be successful, in which the class sizes are small and the instructors care about the success of their students, which is important to me.

Why Social Work?
I was not sure what career I wanted to pursue, but after I took my first psychology class at Howard College I knew I wanted to get a degree as a Social Worker.

Career Goals
I will graduate from Howard College with an Associates of Science. Then I will transfer to Angelo State University and earn my Bachelors Degree in Social Work. I plan on eventually earning my Masters Degree in Social Work . I want to make a positive change in children’s lives and give them assurance they will not be just another name in someone’s file.

Favorite Professor
I have a few who I have grown close to, among them are: Mrs. Tish Gutierrez, Mrs. Nancy Treadwell, Mrs. Mary Tinsley, Mr. Keith Hidalgo, Mrs. Lanna Hubbard, and Mrs. Pam Callan.

Best Studying Advice
Use a recorder to take notes and ask questions if you aren’t sure. Do not cram the night before an exam, you won’t be successful on the exam. Find a study buddy and utilize the tutoring center.

Most Valuable Learning Experience
To put myself out there and be involved to be able to meet people who can help me further my education.

Relax and Have Fun
I go hang out in the Student Connection Center between classes with friends and acquaintances. Sometimes I enjoy visiting my mother. She lives in the country 30 minutes away from San Angelo so I rarely get to see her and when I do it always feels like I’m taking a road trip which is relaxing.

What I like most about Howard College
The small campus, the warm atmosphere, and the professor’s familiarity with the students. I like that it is easy to get involved in student organizations and people are able to stand out as an individual and get noticed.

What I tell future Howard College students
Communicate with your professors and advisors! They want to see you succeed and help you accomplish your goals. Do not be afraid to get involved in the organizations. They will make your college experience more rewarding and you will create memorable moments!
