HC Loses A Pillar and Long-Time Friend

Mckinny Picture

On Sunday, December 14, 2008, Howard College lost Mr. Don McKinney, a member of the Board of Trustees and truly special friend of Howard College, as he passed away peacefully at his home in Big Spring, Texas.  For the second time in as many months, Howard College finds itself losing some of the seasoned wisdom and guidance that has led this college to the success we know today.  McKinney has served the community as a member of the Board of Trustees for 36 years, first arriving on the HC scene in 1972.  He has served the board as Chairman, Vice-Chairman and Secretary as well as a member on many other special committees and work groups.  Mr. McKinney had made the statement, while running for office in 2000, that he “had the privilege of watching Howard College grow into a first-rate institution.”  The reality is that Mr. McKinney was instrumental in that growth and Howard College has known the privilege of his participation and support for many years.
“Don McKinney holds a special place in the heart of Howard College and SWCID that can not be replaced,” said Howard College President, Dr. Cheryl T. Sparks.  “He has been a genuine pillar of strength and guidance for Howard College and he will be greatly missed.”
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to Howard College, Don and Nan McKinney Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Mrs. Jan Foresyth, 1001 Birdwell Lane, Big Spring, TX  79720.  Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home. Online condolences can be made at www.npwelch.com

Model aircraft enthusiasts and others gathered at Comanche Trail Lake Saturday to honor the namesake of the Don McKinney Float and Fly.

McKinney, a leading member of the Big Spring Model Aircraft Association, died in December, but his spirit permeated the event which bears his name, officials said.

“I can't think of a better day for us to come together and reflect on the life of Don McKinney,” said Howard College President Dr. Cheryl Sparks, who worked closely with McKinney during his 36-year tenure on the college's board of trustees. “In his life, Don did the very best anyone could do.”

Aside from college officials, BSMAA members also paid tribute to McKinney, a founding member of the organization.

“I can't tell you how instrumental Don was to this club,” said Chuck Miller, BSMAA vice president. “The association is very saddened by the loss of Don. He loved anything and everything to do with flying and that love followed throughout his life.”

Miller recalled McKinney as a tireless advocate for the organization.

“Don shared this spirit with whoever wanted to learn about model aircraft,” he said. “He always had the time and always wanted to teach and inspire others. The model aircraft association is very fortunate to have had Don as a leading member for more than 20 years.

“We want to make this Float and Fly a celebration of his life,” Miller added.

During the ceremony, officials with the BSMAA and Big Spring Refinery, where McKinney worked for many years, announced separate $500 donations to the Don and Nan McKinney Scholarship Fund at Howard College. With those donations, Sparks announced, the scholarship is now endowed.

McKinney's son Larry expressed the family's gratitude at the end of the event.

“Dad loved four things — family, church, Howard College and the model airplane club,” he said. “Thank you all for this. This is a great honor.”
